Soccer Team Scores with PGT Innovations’ Goal to Improve Communities

November 15, 2019

A little over one year ago, Hurricane Michael made landfall in the Florida Panhandle, leaving millions to suffer the lingering effects of the Category 5 storm. While many local businesses and residents were forced to rebuild their lives, students struggled with school closures and a major disruption to their academic and athletic schedules. School sports teams that relied heavily on community donations were left picking up the pieces as well, with the state’s philanthropic efforts now heavily focused on storm recovery.

At A. Crawford Mosely High School, which is located less than five miles from Panama City, the boys’ soccer team experienced that shortage of funds firsthand. Not only were the soccer goals and fences destroyed during the storm, but the school’s new storage building was also blown away with all of the training gear and soccer balls it contained. Mosley High School’s Athletic Director estimated the soccer program suffered between $40,000 – 45,000 in damage as a result of the hurricane.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough money from the school’s insurance policy to replace any of the supplies or gear that the team uses. PGT Innovations, a national leader in the premium window and door category, has a strong presence in the Florida Panhandle and wanted to assist the team in returning to normalcy this season. By donating $3,000 to the boys’ soccer team at Mosely High School, they were able to purchase 50 new soccer balls and 45 pairs of Nike team socks.

“We are extremely grateful that PGT Innovations chose to donate to our soccer program,” said Ricky Laymon, Vice President of the Soccer Booster Club at Mosley High School. “Helping one another in tough times is what makes people great. We want our boys to learn how to give to others and how to help those in need. PGT Innovations has helped us accomplish that this season.”

If there is any silver lining in this situation, the coaches say it is to teach the boys the important life lesson that a catastrophic event can also make a community stronger and unite people in the face of tragedy.

With the PGT Innovations donation kicking their fundraising efforts into full gear, now the soccer club can focus on the next step in their fundraising efforts, which is replacing their storage building.
