PGT Innovations’ Orlando Team Partners with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida for its Summer Food Service Program

Hunger doesn’t take a summer break.

More than 60 percent of Central Florida children qualify for free or reduced lunch, but only about 9 percent of those children participate in a summer meal program. When the school year ends, many children are at risk of going hungry and not having the adequate nutrition they need.

Food banks across the country are working to help close the hunger gap for the most vulnerable population through various campaigns to end summer hunger. In June, PGT Innovations’ Orlando location participated in its inaugural Storm Out Summer Hunger initiative.

Collection bins were placed throughout the facilities, and team members donated non-perishable snacks and meal items to provide meals to children who are out of school for the summer and also support the food bank in general.

The Orlando facility partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida in Orlando, collecting 107 items, weighing 128 pounds, for its Florida Summer Food Service Program.

Through the Florida Summer Food Service Program, Second Harvest prepares, packages and distributes free nutritious meals and snacks to children and teens, ages 18 and under. Last summer, Second Harvest provided 258,293 meals at more than 113 feeding sites. Since the program began in 2008, Second Harvest has provided more than 1 million summer meals to kids across Central Florida.

Second Harvest collects, stores and distributes food to more than 550 feeding partners in Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia Counties. Last year, the food bank distributed nearly 58 million meals to its partner programs.
